Coaster project

Overview

This project required a demonstration of proficiency in loading and executing an operation on a HAAS 3-axis CNC mill. The operator was responsible for cutting stock to specified length, properly fixing the stock in a custom fixture, and taking all the necessary steps involved in performing the first-time run of a CAM program with proper machinist procedures.

Advice for future Mech 200B Students

This project was far more focused on the operator's knowledge of the HAAS CNC mill interface and the standard practices used in preparing a part for processing. It was more of a formal evaluation of your skills and requires a different mindset to do well in.

  • Don’t be afraid to ask EMEC employees for guidance on the HAAS exam, they are there to help you and willing to point you in the right directions.
  • Make sure to explore the mill’s interface and tool cabinet beforehand so you know what to expect from the exam. Some of the materials and tools that you are required to identify are deceivingly similar, so it’s worth taking a closer look at them beforehand to determine a way to distinguish them.
  • Take notes when watching the training videos, there are a lot of numbers like standard pressure and nominal tank volume that you’re expected to have memorized and verified before you operate the machine.
